"New Year New You" Cleanse 2020 Day 1!

New Year New You Day 1 is in the books! Yesterday at least two staff members took part in this eating plan. Day 1 parameters are as follows:

Fruit Day - Eat all the fruits you want, except bananas. The lowest calorie fruits are watermelon and cantaloupe, so if you eat mostly melons you will lose more weight.

One of us managed to get through the day with no slip ups, and one of us added a little milk to instant coffee (because I mean… drinking instant coffee black should be considered a hate crime) but that was it! So… I’d call this a win win for both of us!

I had honeydew, cantaloupe, watermelon, grapes, apples, and clementines. The biggest challenge for me on day one always is that there’s no hot food… I’ve read you can cook apples and other fruits, but I’m not even a fan of pie or apple crisp… so the thought of cooking fruit is “gaggy” to me! I will say, however, that this is year six of me doing this… and yesterday was by far the easiest day 1 I’ve had… maybe because I know what to expect? I’m not sure… but I was very surprised. The second hardest part of me doing this eating challenge in general is cooking normal food for my family that I can’t eat… but I’ve learned a few tricks. Like, for instance, last night I cooked something that I wouldn’t be upset about missing out on!

The second participant definitely got a little more adventurous on her food than I did! Strawberries, clementines, blueberries, kiwi, pineapple, honeydew, grapes, watermelon and apples. She also gave frozen mixed berries a shot, but noted they get soggy when they defrost, so she doesn’t recommend eating them on their own. Her recommendation is to leave those to smoothies. She also tried making a smoothie with water and frozen strawberry/banana mix and it’s safe to say it didn’t turn out as expected! She noted that none of the fruit taste ended up in the water… neither one of us is sure how that would have happened! She did mention that if she'd thawed the fruit out first, it may have turned out differently. I liked the outside of the box thinking though… I’ll be the first to say I never get very adventurous on fruit day, so I have some ideas for next year anyway! (For instance, it had never crossed my mind to eat Kiwi... which would be way more filling than watermelon!)

One other “fun” side effect of eating fruit… which is full of fibre… all day: let’s just say it is very effective at clearing out your system, and we’ll leave it at that!

Tune in tomorrow to see how Day 2 has gone for the both of us!
