Appy Friday: Get a bit fit with FitBit

Unless you never go online for anything, ever, you’ve probably heard about the latest thing to hit the fitness market: FitBit. FitBit offers a few different products to choose from, but for the purpose of this review, we will discuss the flagship model: The FitBit One. I wouldn’t necessarily consider myself a bandwagon jumper when it comes to the latest in health and fitness, but I most assuredly am a tech geek, and FitBit fed into that obsession for me. I also like to stay active and like to think I make taking care of myself a priority so I figured I would give it a try. FitBit One measures the following:

  • How many steps you take per day… so yes, a pedometer, but a pedometer that boasts over 95% accuracy (and I have to say I’ve been happy so far).  The recommended number of daily steps is 10,000.
  • How many flights of stairs you navigate – Not sure this is 100% accurate, or if they consider a flight of stairs a certain number of stairs, but it does at the very least give you an idea of how much time you spend going up and down elevation.
  • Sleep patterns. This is probably my favourite feature on FitBit. When you’re ready for bed, you press and hold the button and it starts recording. In the morning, press and hold the button again to stop the timer. FitBit records how long you’ve slept, how many times you were restless as well as how many times you woke up in the night. I find this feature invaluable.
  • How many active minutes you had each day. While 10,000 steps are recommended, 30 minutes of active time is also recommended, and FitBit gives you credit for each individually.
  • Water consumption through the day. Obviously FitBit can’t automatically register this, but the beauty of FitBit is that it works with your smartphone or online, and you can record it there. (We’ll get more into that in a bit… haha, get it? BIT)
  • Food plans/calorie intake/calorie in and out ratio. FitBit not only has its own section where you can set up a meal plan and record your progress, but if you’re already using a program like MyFitnessPal you can sync with your FitBit account and keep track of everything together. Being able to compare calories consumed against calories burned is invaluable. After all it’s that basic concept that gets you to lose weight!
  • A clock. Because I mean really, why NOT add a clock to it?

Once you have your fitbit device, it’s super simple to set up at www.fitbit.com/setup. FitBit comes with a small, barely noticeable USB which you can keep plugged into your computer. Then, whenever you are within 20 feet of it, it will automatically sync for you. The second option is to set up FitBit on your phone (currently available for iPhone and Android), and connect via Bluetooth. This will also automatically sync things for you. Personally, I preferred setting it up on my computer so I didn’t have to keep Bluetooth on all the time and kill my battery. Once everything is set up and synced, you can keep track of your progress online or from an app. I have been a “FitBitter” for almost two weeks now, and I can say without a doubt that I absolutely love it. My recommendation for day one is just to go through a day as you normally would. This will give you a baseline, and you’ll know right away what areas you need to step up in and which areas you’re right on the money with. Another nice feature of FitBit is that as you reach milestones (5,000 steps for the first time, 10,000 steps etc) it sends you a congratulatory email that you can share on social media to help keep you motivated. I personally love this feature, because I’ll be in the middle of my day and out of nowhere it’s like getting a pat on the back. I also love this device, because it counts all your activity, not just when you “think” you’re active, like at a gym. As an example, one day I was packing and moving around A LOT I ended up clocking over 17,000 steps and 25 trips on the stairs, with over a half hour of very active time. By the end of the day, needless to say, I was exhausted and didn’t go to the gym. If I didn’t have FitBit, showing me that I’d made good progress that day, I would have instead been focusing on the fact I didn’t go to the gym. For anyone who wants to keep an eye on their health and track their progress, I HIGHLY recommend this device!
