Super Foods for a Super You!

Super Foods: What are they and why should you care about them? Super foods are particular foods which are exceptionally good for you, usually because of their essential fatty acids, antioxidants or fiber.  Other foods make the super foods list because of their ability to help lower or regulate blood sugar levels. This is important for those concerned with diabetes, slowing the aging process, obesity, wrinkles and a host of other degenerative diseases. We all know fruits and vegetables are good for us, but incorporating the below list into your regular diet as well will help give you an even bigger burst of healthy eating!

  1. Açaí Berry – Helps combat premature aging, promotes cardiovascular and digestive health, and aids in proper muscle contraction and regeneration.
  2. The Allium Family (Onions, Garlic, Chives, Leeks, Shallots and Scallions) – Lowers total cholesterol, aids in prevention of hardened arteries, lowers blood pressure, reduces the risk of blood clots, destroys infection causing bacteria, reduces the risk of certain cancers, helps stave the onset of Alzheimer’s, and enhances detoxification.
  3. Barley – lowers cholesterol, helps protect against cancer especially digestive system cancers such as colon cancer, cardio-protective, helps level blood sugar, and helps lower breast cancer risk.
  4. Beans and Lentils – provide amino acids which is especially essential for vegetarians who aren’t getting this from meat, nutritious, help regulate blood sugars, and release sustained energy.
  5. Buckwheat – By far the best cholesterol-lowering food found to date, helps lower diabetes risk by stabilizing blood sugars, aids in preventing obesity, and helps reduce hypertension.
  6. Green Foods – It ain’t easy being green, but green super foods have a marked benefit on cholesterol, blood pressure, immune response, and cancer prevention, thanks in part to high concentration levels of chlorophyll.
  7. Hot Peppers – Anti-inflammatory, analgesic (this helps with stuffy noses), anti-cancer, heart healthy, and TWICE the amount of vitamin C found in citrus fruits. When cold and flu season come around, up your intake of peppers and fight those germs! (I personally do this and I have to say it works)
  8. Nuts and Seeds - If you want to dramatically decrease your risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes, control your weight with no hunger pangs and reduce the visible signs of aging like wrinkles and sagging skin, “go nuts”.
  9. Sprouts – Sprouts are a concentrated source of “living enzymes” which help our bodies tremendously, especially as we age. They are also easier to digest.
  10. Yogurt and Kefir – Full of probiotics which actively promote optimal health.

  So…. Who’s hungry??
