A Week of Go

A Week of Go

By now everyone has probably heard, good or bad, of Pokemon: Go. You would have to be sequestered at jury level to not have heard something about it, and it’s safe to say the reviews have been mixed. For every negative news article or social media comment I’ve come across, I’ve come across a positive one as well. It really seems to be a case of you either love it or hate it!

The biggest argument against it, from what I’ve seen, is players who don’t pay attention to what they are doing. This argument, however, has been there regarding cell phone usage in general. The fact of the matter is, when someone is carrying something in their hand that they are paying more attention to than what they should be (walking or driving), there’s a problem. And as a whole I think that’s where everyone in general needs to be smarter.

I’m not one to focus on the negatives in any situation, and I have to say that after playing it for a week, I think the game is ingenious, and I think it’s created a platform that is going to launch a new level of mobile gaming. Imagine an app for you “Walking Dead” fans where you can walk around and shoot zombies? Or you Indiana Jones fans where you hunt out ancient relics to collect? Or even you Mario Bros fans where the world around you becomes your “level” and you look for hidden coins and bonus levels? Going back to Pokemon: Go… my opinion is that this game not only has broken the mobile gaming mold, but it was released at the perfect time.

The biggest gamers for this would be the ones who were teens when the original Pokemon game was released. These former teens, who would dream of becoming a Pokemon Master (my son being one of them) are now 20-something year olds with disposable income. Personally, I know the names of the first generation Pokemon and that’s completely because of my son.

I think that this game also appeals to my generation because not only has it become a fun way to interact with your kids, but for me I appreciate the fitness aspect of it. I’m always looks for new ways to make exercising fun, and I have to say I’ve had more fun out walking then I have in a long time. And I’ve walked FURTHER than I was averaging prior to this game too! Before, my weekly step count average was 8395.5 steps. Week one of playing Pokemon: Go and my step average was 15,860.5! And I honestly didn’t feel that I was working harder… I was just having fun with my husband and my kids!

For those who are playing it and enjoying it, keep on going and maybe I’ll see you out on the hunt! Have you given Pokemon: Go a try? We’d love to hear from you!
