This week, staff from Belmont Health & Wealth (four in total) are taking part in a “New Year’s Cleanse” eating plan for seven days, to help kick those nasty holiday cravings for salt and sugar. You can read about what it is here. Belmont employees were all encouraged to weigh themselves before the week started. We will be weighing ourselves at the end to report on the total weight loss, then again one week later to report on how we are doing once we “open the floodgates” back up to eating normally. The hope for this week is to not only kick some unhealthy cravings, but jump start some healthy eating habits! I will report my progress, as well as staff (who are participating anonymously).
Day One
Yesterday was Day one of the New Year’s Cleanse, which was Fruit Day. The directions for Day One were as follows: “Eat all the fruits you want, except bananas. The lowest calorie fruits are watermelon and cantaloupe, so if you eat mostly melons you will lose more weight.”
Me: I am extremely happy to report that I DID NOT CHEAT! I stuck with fruit all day long. I had melon, cantaloupe, pineapple, strawberries, apple, and clementine. The hardest times for me were around 3:00, when I had a pretty vivid daydream about a plate of nachos, and again when I was cooking supper for my family. While everyone in my house had “breakfast for supper”, I munched on my cantaloupe. I also had eight glasses of water, which kept me pretty flushed (and regularly “needing to flush” I might add!)
Agent A: (agent just sounds so much cooler than Employee 1) “I totally cheated. Pepsi, salt, crystal light, 5 mini eggs and a little shepherds pie. By 6 i needed something other than fruit. Today should be easier... I hope.” (Personally, I think if you stuck to the eating plan until 6:00 that’s still something to be proud of! It is NOT easy!!)
Agent B: “Well the first day leaves a lot of room to improve for me. Because I was (insert personal story here which would totally give away who this is, so it’s being stricken from the record!) I had fruit and cereal for breakfast and a fruit cocktail from Superstore for lunch, but dinner was a disaster. My mom made a roast beef dinner and it was too good to ignore. I did have apple pie though...does that help? Anyway, hoping to be more compliant today.” (Apple pie should totally count shouldn’t it? It would… if life were more fair! Still, very good shot and hoping your day goes better today!)
Agent C: “I did manage to get through the day with fruit only, but it was challenging! Dinner time (when my family was cooking chicken wings) was definitely the most difficult part of the day to get through. But, I did it – on to veggie day!” (GREAT JOB!!! I find fruit day one of the most challenging days because there really isn’t any fruit that you can heat up to have a hot meal with. And I know first-hand it’s extremely challenging when there’s other food around you!)
Day Two is veggie day! How will our “Belmont Fab Four” weather this day? Tune in tomorrow to find out!
