Last week, staff from Belmont Health & Wealth (four in total) took part in a “New Year’s Cleanse” eating plan for seven days, to help kick those nasty holiday cravings for salt and sugar. You can read about what it is here. Belmont employees were all encouraged to weigh themselves before the week started. We will be weighing ourselves at the end to report on the total weight loss, then again one week later to report on how we are doing once we “open the floodgates” back up to eating normally. The hope for this week is to not only kick some unhealthy cravings, but jump start some healthy eating habits! I will report my progress, as well as staff (who are participating anonymously).
Day Seven
Last Sunday was day seven of the New Year’s Cleanse (which a couple of us called heaven), or Miracle Soup day. The directions for day seven were as follows:
“Miracle Soup! Miracle Soup Recipe: 2-3 Large Onions Chopped, 1 head of Cabbage chopped, 1 green pepper chopped, 5-6 celery stalks chopped, 2 large cans of diced tomatoes, and 2 packages of Lipton Beefy Onion Soup Mix. Put the chopped vegetables in a pan and pour the tomatoes (that have been slightly blended in a blender) over top. Add 4-6 cups of water, enough to barely cover the vegetables. Cook for 10 minutes. Add the Beefy Onion Soup Mix and cook until all the vegetables are tender. Eat to your heart’s content.”
Me: It’s kind of weird eating soup for breakfast, but I did it! And lunch time as well. I also had it for snack. The only modification I made to the recipe was that I added jalapenos to give it a little kick. I can honestly say that I really liked the soup… I put most of the vegetables through my food processor so everything was well blended. After seven days, however, I was pretty tired of having to eat pretty much the same thing for a full day, so I lasted until around 6:00, where I had some whole wheat pasta to compensate. I still really enjoyed the soup though and even packed some for lunches the following week for both my hubby and I!
Wrap up of New Year’s cleanse: I absolutely would do this again, especially given this was my 3rd year participating. In total, I lost 6 pounds!
Agent A: Wrap up: Even though I stopped on Friday, I was still down 2 pounds. I would do it again when I’m feeling better.
Agent B: I didn’t have the gumption to make soup but did have a healthy beef curry dish… delicious.
Wrap up: I did not weigh myself, but I suspect I may have lost a couple pounds… I only really noticed when the belt buckle goes into a different hole. I would say yes, I would try it again in the future, but would prefer if I had a few more options each day that were still considered “cleanse friendly”… is that possible?
Agent C: Wrap up: Even though mine ended on Friday, I lost 2.5 pounds. Pretty good results for just four days! I would not do this again.
