October is Mental Health Awareness Month, and nothing helps keep the brain healthy than some mind games! (Some good mind games, for the record….) Lumosity is a great app developed by neuroscientists at Lumos Labs, which uses game play to improve cognitive abilities. The five areas of focus are memory, attention, flexibility, speed of processing and problem solving.
Lumosity first begins with giving you a “fit test” to see where you’re at, then suggests games to help improve areas where you need improvement. Each day that you log in, Lumosity will give you your daily training, which typically only takes 10 minutes. However, you are given the option to continue playing if you want to! Lumosity is far from “one and done”. It is constantly evolving and improving, with over 100 independent researchers contributing their knowledge.
More than 50 million people have used this app. Although reviews are mixed as to whether or not the games result in marked improvements in any of the areas focused on, it’s still a fun way to spend 10 minutes of your day. (I wouldn’t be using it as an Alzheimer’s treatment, however) Lumosity is available on Android and iOS. No smart phone? No problem! Lumosity is a web-based application too! https://www.lumosity.com/
