Appy Friday: FitBit It!

Now is the time to Fitbit it! There is no question that wearable fitness devices are the new “thing” and Fitbit without question has a winning formula. In fact, if you own a fitness tracker, statistically chances are it’s a Fitbit. As of May 2015, over 21 million Fitbit fitness trackers had been sold; the next closest for sales was Apple Watch with over 2.3 million sold. Pretty impressive numbers! Several other fitness competitors have stepped up to the plate however, in hopes of evening out the wearable tracker playing field. In a review conducted by Wareable, a great place for tech reviews, they ranked FitBit first in the following two categories: Best Overall Fitness Tracker: Fitbit Blaze won the prize. Fitbit blaze has step tracking, sleep monitoring, 24/7 heart rate monitoring and has a colour display. It looks more like a watch than a fitness tracker too! Best for heart rate monitoring: Fitbit Charge HR. By using continuous heart rate monitoring the Fitbit Charge HR can give you more accurate feedback on your activity levels as well as your overall health. The OLED screen will show your daily stats, as well as caller ID from your smartphone, and the app is incredibly user friendly (The same app is used across Fitbit platforms). Fitbit Charge HR features step tracking, sleep monitoring, all-day heart rate tracking, and stopwatch mode for workouts. Fitbit really shines in the user base too. As of August of 2015, Fitbit had 19 million registered users, 9.5 million of which were active users, and controlled 34.2% of the wearable market…  which is impressive, given the number of competitors. It’s very motivating to add people to your friends list, and from there you can launch personal challenges or compete against one another. Having buddies also helps make you accountable, which may encourage you to get up and get moving. The Fitbit app tracks your steps, sleep, active minutes, distance travelled and calories burned. You can also use it to record how much water you’re drinking and your food journal, and Fitbit will tell you how many more calories you can consume in a particular day. You can set goals and the app will encourage you to reach them. With many models to choose from, Fitbit is a solid choice for a wearable device!
