We all know the importance of trying to get ourselves on a schedule when it comes to bedtime and sleep. Numerous studies have been conducted which support the benefits of being on a regular schedule, which allows your melanin levels to adjust properly. Have you found that even when you try to go to bed at a regular time, you still can’t fall asleep? Technology may be the culprit. Unplug!
We are literally bombarded with technology in this day and age: television, computers, smart phones, Facebook, Twitter, etc etc. The list goes on and on. And all of these mediums stimulate our minds. And the key to successful rest is that we slow our minds down. Which means unplugging from technology at least an hour before bedtime.
Try this for the next few weeks: set a bedtime (and this could vary each night depending on what your schedule is), and at least an hour before your bedtime shut off your phone, turn off the tv and power down the computer. Spend that hour relaxing, reading, colouring or sketching, meditating, taking a hot bath, packing your lunch for the next day, going for a walk… anything really. Anything you find relaxing. Allow your brain the time to slow down so it can rest for the evening. If you get in the habit of doing this, you may find that not only are you able to fall asleep quicker, but your quality of sleep will be better too!
