We are now three weeks into the New Year… how are your resolutions going? If you’ve faltered a bit, don’t beat yourself up too much… a staggering 92% of people don’t stick with their resolutions. There are many reasons for this – Setting unrealistic goals, not being mentally prepared to see the resolutions through, and even unsupportive friends. Personally, I think there should be an addition to this list – making a resolution right before midnight, when you’ve already had maybe a few too many glasses of wine!
If you’ve found yourself faltering, it’s still not too late. Remember when you set a goal, you need to make it more specific then “I’m going to exercise more” or “I am going to lose weight”. Try not to think of the end result so much, but the steps you need to take to get there. If one of your goals, as an example, is being more active, start small and change one thing. Make a decision to start taking the stairs at work, as an example. And stick to that plan every single day.
Once you get to a point where it becomes part of your routine (typically it takes 3 weeks to form a new habit), then introduce something else new, while keeping your previous habit active. Maybe step two will be “I’m going to go for a ½ hour walk every weekend”. By starting small, and keeping the habits you form, you’ll be well on your way to making that New Year’s Resolution a reality. After all, slow and steady wins the race.
