Are You Practicing Balanced Health?

Are you practicing balanced health? Those of us who recognize and appreciate the importance of being healthy know the importance of eating healthy, making sure to have all the food groups, and why vitamins and minerals are important. We also recognize the importance of staying active for heart health and overall wellness. But are you devoting just as much time and attention to feeding your heart, mind and spirit as well?

When most of us think of being healthy, we immediately think of diet and exercise. Both of these components, however, fall under one category: the body. Think of your health as a flat table with four legs, and a marble in the very center. To achieve true balance it is important to take the time to “feed” each leg equally. This keeps your table level and keeps that marble from sliding too far one way or the other. Make a plan every day to feed all four aspects of health: Mind, Body, Heart and Spirit.

Finding things that stimulate your mind, heart and spirit is not as difficult as it sounds! For your mind, work on a crossword puzzle, play a game of Sudoku, take the time to read every day, or learn something new. Nothing keeps the brain on its toes more than continuous learning. Cut out one of those television shows and devote the time to feeding your brain!

The heart is our center… what makes us feel. Find something heart-warming to do every day… hug your child, watch a sappy YouTube video, call your mom. Anything that tugs on the ol’ heart strings is just what the doctor ordered. Similar to mind and body, heart and spirit are closely linked as well. Things that may feed your heart may also feed your spirit. Do something philanthropic. Help someone in need. Pay it forward. And at the end of each day, stop and be grateful for who you have in your life and the blessings you’ve been given. Practice balanced health and you may find you also achieve inner peace!
