2013/2014 will definitely be remembered as the “Season of Snow”. With the exception of White Juan in 2004 this has to be the most snow I’ve seen here in a single winter since moving here in 1997. (And for the record…. Whoever is still singing “Let it Snow Let it Snow Let it Snow” can probably stop now…) With everything covered in an ivory slippery sheet, the risks of falls most certainly rise. There are, however, some tips to help you avoid those nasty spills during Snowpocalypse!
- First and foremost, wear appropriate footwear. If your car should have snow tires, your feet should have snow shoes! Shoes designed for the powdery white stuff are far less likely to slide on surfaces, which offer you more stability. Just tuck those “to die for” shoes in your bag until you get to your destination and then make the switch! And for the record… winter boots with heels really don’t qualify as proper snowear!
- Don’t walk with your hands in your pockets. You may be “too cool” for gloves or mittens, but if you happen to slip while your hands are in makeshift handcuffs, the only thing you have to break your fall is your face.
- This seems like a no brainer, but you would be surprised how many people injure themselves each winter by doing this: don’t jog on the snow and ice. We all admire your dedication, but it’s far safer to look around locally for indoor alternatives when the flakes are flying, or pretend you’re a hamster and jump on that treadmill.
- Adjust your steps when walking on snow. Your usual fast gait will most likely result in a spill. You don’t have to pretend you’re navigating hot coals but taking extra care is just good snow sense. Assume there’s unseen ice under the snow that you do see. (I should have taken my own advice about two months ago!)
- The same rule applies when you’re driving in winter as when you’re walking: give yourself extra time to get where you’re going. Rushing is not the name of the game when conditions are less than ideal. Take extra care and you may find you can actually ENJOY winter!
