October is Healthy Workplace Month

October is Healthy Workplace Month. A healthy workplace is not only good for the employees who work there, but for the company itself.  Statistics have shown that happy employees not only call in sick less, but actually perform better.

Quick Happy Stats:
  • Companies with happy employees outperform the competition by 20%
  • Happy employees are 12% more productive
  • 67% of full-time employees with access to free food at work are “extremely” or “very” happy at their current job
  • Happy salespeople produce 37% greater sales
  • 36% of employees would give up $5,000.00 a year in salary to be happier at work
  • Close work friendships boost employee satisfaction by 50%
  • People with a best friend at work are 7 times more likely to fully engage in their work
  • Employees who report being happy at work take 10X fewer sick days
  • Fortune’s “100 best companies to work for” enjoyed a raise in stock prices of 14% per year from 1998-2005, compared to 6% for the overall market
  • 42% of employees are happy with the rewards and recognition their companies offer

Job satisfaction plays a pretty big part in the whole equation, as well. Employees who feel valued and feel they are making a difference within their organization care more and perform better.

Top 3 factors contributing to job satisfaction:
  • Job security
  • Opportunities to use skills and abilities
  • Organization’s financial stability
Workplace Wellness

Focusing on workplace wellness is another big part in the equation. Companies who invest in the health of their employees, through programs such as EAP, flex time, working from home or conducting wellness initiatives reap the rewards of a happy workforce. Many companies are recognizing the importance of flexibility, and the reward is dedicated staff that stays. A company that encourages employees to be active is another great way to promote workplace wellness. One suggestion is to organize a walking club, where ½ of a lunch hour is out walking. Classes over noon hour is another great way to encourage being active. Belmont Health & Wealth is pleased to offer, among its many products and services, a wellness platform called “Health Connected”. It’s a great way to help engage your workforce, while encouraging a little inter-office competition and fun. Monthly wellness challenges can be set up, and for those who are already using fitness devices like Fitbit or Jawbone, it syncs flawlessly with the platform.
