Monday Monday

Monday Monday

Soon it will be back… Monday Monday…. Yet another Monday, and unless you happen to strike it rich with Powerball on the weekend, chances are you’ll be back at work starting the weekly grind. Monday blahs are a feeling that strike many people, and it usually starts on Sunday as you mentally prepare for the next day. There are some ways you can help combat those blues’y Monday mornings!

Get good sleep – Many of us have a tendency to stay up later on the weekends, with the blissful knowledge that no alarms need to be set for the morning! On Sunday evening, however, make a concerted effort to turn in a little earlier, so you can start off your week feeling refreshed and ready to tackle your day.

Get up early – While hitting snooze a few times may be tempting, you’ll feel much better if you get up and start your day not feeling rushed and already behind. For you keeners, nothing helps boost those feel-good hormones better than an early morning workout too!

Mentally prepare – The last thing any of us want to do on a weekend is think about work, but taking the time to prepare for your tasks for the week ensures that you are starting off the morning ready to go. This is something you can even start doing on a Friday afternoon!

Dress it up – Since many Fridays are casual days, it only stands to reason there should be a dress up day too! Pick Monday as your day to dress to the nine’s…. when you look good, you feel good so choosing this day to wear your power suit or your favourite outfit will do wonders for your mental preparedness.

Adjust your schedule – In a survey conducted on employee productivity, only 24% considered they are productive on Monday. Save your meeting schedules for Tuesday through Friday… many people dread meetings as it is, so this can help you feel more positive about starting your workweek.

Socialize – Instead of running to your desk and diving right in, take some time to talk to your co-workers, talk about your weekends and catch up. It’s a great way to improve employee relationship and network.

No work on the weekends – Nothing ruins a Monday  more than feeling like you haven’t gotten any breaks. Make a concerted effort to take the two days for you and your friends or family. Having that time away may be just the thing to help you feel more positive about the start of your week.

When nothing works – If you’ve tried everything and you still experience an overwhelming sense of dread when the “M word” comes around, the problem could be bigger than the usual blahs. Talk to someone if you need to, or analyze if you’re feeling fulfilled at the job you work at, or if it might be time for a change. A bit of the blahs is normal… genuinely dreading starting your work week is a different thing entirely!

If you have other “beat the Monday blahs” tips, I’d love to hear from you!
