For those of us with a bit of an adventurer in our blood, the best treasure hunt to get involved in is Geocaching. Picture this: a huge outdoor treasure hunt with more clues than you could possibly collect, while participating with anyone in the world. Geocaching is literally that – a real-world, outdoor treasure hunt that uses GPS enabled devices. Using GPS coordinates, adventurers look to find the “geocache” (container) hidden at a particular location. The rules are very simple: If you take something from the geocache (or “cache” as most call it), leave something of equal or greater value so everyone can participate in the fun! There are many different types of caches you can find as well:
- Traditional: These typically have a logbook you can record your find on, and larger containers may contain items for trade!
- Mystery or Puzzle: These caches involve puzzles that you must first solve in order to get the correct coordinates.
- Multi: These caches involve two or more locations. Typically if you find the first location, it’ll contain a clue to the second one!
- Earth: These are special geological location caches where people can visit to learn about a unique feature of the Earth.
- Letterbox: Similar to a general cache, except using letterboxes instead of regular caches
- Event/Mega Event/Giga Event: These caches need to be found at a particular time because this is a place for other geocachers to meet up! This cache is rated based on how many cachers are expected to attend.
- Cache In Trash Out: These are ecological cache’s set up, and the goal of these is once you find the cache, help clean up the area to make the world cleaner!
Geocaching is a great way to get motivated to head outside for some fresh air and some physical activity! There are different Geocaching apps available for iOS as well as Android. If anyone has already done some geocaching, I’d love to hear about your experiences. Happy Treasure Hunting!
